On Saturday 14th August, St Ives Rangers Black Soxs Under 17s were beaten 4-3 by the Haywain Restaurant Veterans in a tightly contested football match. Despite the result, everyone involved went home happy having achieved their aim of raising money for us.

Played in glorious sunshine, the event was well supported by the local community raising a total of £918.18 to support mental health services. Russell Keates, manager of St Ives Rangers Black Sox Under 17s and Health, Safety & Wellbeing Advisor at Morrison Utility Services, said,” Mental health has always been part of people’s lives so Becky Keates, Steve Lowe and I chose this amazing charity to support. Particularly as in the last eighteen months’ mental health has sadly been affected by the pandemic.

Becky, my wife, has sadly lost her brother and father to suicide in the last 30 years and wanted to promote and raise as much money for the charity as possible. Help is needed more than ever right now for vulnerable people who desperately need the support and help to recover from the dark place they are in.”

Catherine Keating, our Community Fundraiser said, “We are so thankful to Russell and both of the football teams for raising awareness of our services, raising money and getting active. It has been a tough year for individuals who have been isolated from others and sport. Just playing sport with one other person over lockdown, or as a team when allowed, has helped people’s wellbeing. Getting out on the pitch also ties in with one of the 5 ways to wellbeing to ‘Be Active’.

As we recover from several lockdowns and the Covid-19 pandemic, people are still struggling with their mental wellbeing in many different ways. In response to increased levels of anxiety, isolation and loneliness, we have adapted our existing services – and are now able to spend more time out in the community with those that need it.”
